A woman is hospitalized after a fiery crash that closed the Merritt Parkway in Fairfield for almost an hour on Monday morning.

One car rolled over several times and ignited when three cars collided around 6 a.m.

An off-duty firefighter came to the woman’s aid and used a fire extinguisher to slow the flames from spreading, according to the Fairfield Fire Department.

As emergency crews extinguished the fire and treated the injured victims, the highway was closed between exits 44 and 42 southbound.

The first crash caused two more vehicles to crash, fire officials said. No one was injured and there was minimal damage, fire officials said.

The female driver in the car that rolled over was transported to St. Vincent’s Hospital. The fire department did not release the names of the victims on Monday morning.
