Fire Breaks Out in Basement of Branford Home

Officials are investigating after a fire broke out in the basement of a Branford home Sunday morning and spread to the first floor.

According to firefighters, the fire started around 4:30 a.m. Sunday at the two-story home at 31 Flat Rock Road in Branford.

It began in the basement and traveled up the walls to the first floor, fire officials said.

Due to smoke, water and fire damage, the house is not livable, according to firefighters. The Red Cross will be assisting four residents to help them find temporary housing.

A building inspector was called to the scene.

Family pets alerted the residents, and everyone made it out safely, firefighters said. No injuries were reported.

Fire officials said there were no working smoke detectors in the home.

Investigators believe the fire was caused by hot embers that escaped the fireplace.
