Smoke pours from an apartment building on Washington Street in Middletown Wednesday.
A least 10 people were displaced by a fire on Washington Street in Middletown Wednesday.
Flames broke out behind an apartment building at 150 Washington Street before 5 a.m. The fire began in a dumpster, according to Deputy Fire Chief Robert Kronenberg.
The fire spread quickly due to the building's old construction, Kronenberg said. The building did not have many fire stops that would have helped contain the flames, he said.
Everyone was able to get out of the apartment without being injured.
Washington Street remained closed while crews continued to put out hot spots.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
