Emergency Personnel Rescue Deer Stuck on Icy Pond in Durham

Winter is here and local fire departments want to remind residents to stay off ice-covered bodies of water.

Sunday morning the Durham Volunteer Fire Company and state Department of Energy and Environmental Protection were called in to rescue a deer stuck on the ice on a pond off Cherry Lane. The fire department said the call was a good cold water training opportunity.

And good news - despite the scare and the cold weather, the animal survived.

The Colchester fire department wants everyone to exercise caution – even if the water is ice-covered, it doesn’t mean the ice is thick. If a pet or animal is stuck in the water, call 911 and wait for emergency personnel to respond with the appropriate equipment.
