A Southington family is without a place to stay after a devastating fire destroyed the home’s attached barn.

The flames ripped through the barn off Norton Street late Wednesday afternoon.  Firefighters say the blaze was fueled by all the stuff stored inside.  Witnesses say two kids were also inside the barn seconds before the fire erupted.

“Everything seemed fine, then all of a sudden a huge flames popped out of the window and 2 kids ran outside carrying rabbits,” said Dylan Thorn of Southington.

Witnesses say those kids could be to blame.  Several people say the kids live in the house that’s attached to the barn.

“The boys said they were playing with matched and something went wrong.  It burned down,” said Alec Mikolinski.

Firefighters say the kids and the three adults living with them made it out safely.  The fire completely destroyed the barn and everything inside.  The flames also scorched the Southington Community Services Building next door.

The Red Cross is helping the family find a place to stay.

The fire marshal is still investigating the cause and will not confirm if the kids are in fact responsible.
