Nearly 80 people are displaced after a fire broke out on Center St. in Wallingford this morning.

The Wallingford Fire Department responded to multiple calls around 5 a.m. for reports of a fire at the Silver Pond Apartments at 656 Center Street.

Upon arrival, the fire department found an apartment fire in the B wing of the senior housing complex.

The occupant of that apartment had opened their door when the fire started so fire was blowing down the hallway. The occupant of that apartment was transported to the hospital as a precaution.

The fire department said that there is significant fire, smoke and water damage to the B wing.  Many of those that have been displaced were transported to the Wallingford Senior Center, according to Fire Chief Peter Struble.

Of the approximately 80 displaced, about half will not be able to return to their homes tonight, Struble said.

Firefighters from Meriden, Hamden and North Branford assisted Wallingford firefighters during the incident.
