Police ID Man Found Dead in Quinnipiac River

Police have identified the man whose body was pulled from the Quinnipiac River in New Haven on Tuesday afternoon, but they are not sure how he wound up in the water.

Police have identified the man as 59-year-old Gary Crawford, of New Haven, and said the Office of the Chief Medical Examiner will perform an autopsy.

Emergency crews responded to the area of the Grand Avenue Bridge around 1 p.m. after receiving reports of a body in the river and found Crawford several hundred feet east of a buoy in the middle of the river, near Peirpont and Front streets, police said.

Police said they are treating this case as a potential crime, but said there is nothing at face-value to suggest it is criminal.

Anyone with information about the case is urged to call detectives at (203) 946-6304.
