Former Church Treasurer Accused of Embezzlement

The former treasurer of a Norwich church is accused of embezzling more than $43,000 from Grace Episcopal Church of Yantic.

Police started investigating on June 24, when a senior warden from the church contacted the department about irregular financial activities in the annual report.

When police looked into it, they initially determined that the former church treasurer, Andrew Rushford, 62, of the Yantic section of Norwich, had stolen approximately $30,000 in a year, police said.

Upon further investigation, they determined that Rushford had embezzled more than $43,000 since 2013, when he took over the treasurer’s position, police said.

Rushford has been charged with first-degree larceny and turned himself in at Norwich Police Department after learning the warrant had been issued.

Rushford was held on a $50,000 court-set bond, but it was reduced to a promise to appear. He is due in court on Aug. 9.

Police don’t expect to make any additional arrests.
