Former Rotary Club Treasurer Sentenced to Prison for Embezzlement

A 70-year-old Milford man and former Rotary Club treasurer has been sentenced to three years in prison for stealing tens of thousands of dollars from three local nonprofit organizations.

Richard Weir, who pleaded guilty in July to larceny, was sentenced Tuesday in Superior Court.

Prosecutors say Weir, the long-time treasurer of the Milford Rotary Club, embezzled about $235,000 from that organization over a 20-year period. They say he also stole money from the Special Olympics and the Milford Club.

Prosecutors say some of that money was returned to the charities before Weir's arrest last December.

Defense attorney Howard Germeiner says Weir had intended to pay back all the money and is very remorseful. His sentence also includes a restitution order.
