Quinnipiac Student Silent in Court

Accused of Making Racially Charged Phone Calls

An expelled Quinnipiac University student was arraigned Thursday on charges he made threatening and harassing phone calls to members of the school's basketball team.

Charles Merritt, 18, of Maine, is free on $100,000 bond.  He made no comments in court on Thursday, and promised to not contact the victims.

Merritt's accused of making racially charged phone calls to three African American basketball players from the school.  Two of the young men targeted were his roommates.

He has since been expelled from Quinnipiac University.

Quinnipiac officials didn't comment Thursday. They're still investigating racial slurs and a swastika that were scrawled on cork boards outside the players' rooms. Merritt is not charged in connection with that investigation.
