Fourth State Resident Dies of Swine Flu

A Hartford county adult has died of swine flu. This person is the fourth in the state to die after contracting the illness.

The person, who is between 40 and 49, had underlying health issues and died Wednesday at Hartford Hospital, according to the state health department and hospital.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family and friends. We continue to take every safety precaution to prevent the spread of the disease to staff members or other patients,” hospital officials said in a news release.

On June 2, a Waterbury woman with underlying health issues died. On June 12, a kindergarten-aged boy from Waterbury died. He also has underlying health issues.

On June 15, a Waterbury woman in her 40s died after contracting swine flu. She had been treated at Waterbury Hospital for a respiratory ailment before being diagnosed with swine flu.

Throughout the state, there have been 767 confirmed cases. Twenty-eight people have been hospitalized and most have been discharged, according to a news release from the state health department.

The health department released figures of the people who have been hospitalized. New Haven County has had the most cases at 14, followed by 10 people in Fairfield County. Hartford County has had four Swine flu-related hospitalizations.

The state health department has not said if the person is a woman or a man.
