Fox Euthanized in Ledyard

Animal control took more than 80 phone calls about the fox.

For the past few weeks, the Ledyard Animal Control Office have received complaint after complaint about fox sightings from people in the Gales Ferry section. On Monday, the animal was euthanized after neighbors called a professional trapper to do the job because the animal control officer couldn’t catch the creature.

“Every time Animal Control got out there, the fox will looked at us and take off, so there is nothing we can do. We don’t carry weapons, we don’t go out there and kill wildlife. We are not licensed to touch wildlife whatsoever” Officer Kimlyn Marshall said.

Animal Control officials said the animal was looking unhealthy and suggest that people call a nuisance wildlife control professional to take care of similar issues.

“You have to weigh the issues, whether or not they have rabies. A fox that is not scared of humans may pose a danger. I mean, I could walk out of the garage and it could attack me” John Felty, a Gales Ferry resident, said.

Authorities said that foxes that have lost their fear of people cannot be allowed to remain in a well-populated residential area and recommend that you don’t feed wild animals if you don’t want them around.
