Police Search for Thief Who Stole $50,000 in Furs in Greenwich

Police are searching for a fugitive suspected of stealing thousands of dollars in expensive furs from Saks Fifth Avenue in Greenwich on Wednesday morning.

Police have charged Gerald Norman, 50, with criminal possession of stolen property in connection to the case but are looking for a second suspect who fled.

Someone stole several fur coats from the Saks store on Greenwich Avenue about 11:15 a.m. on Wednesday and fled in a waiting sedan with another person inside, Greenwich Officer Robert Berry said in a statement. The stolen coats were worth more than $50,000.

After broadcasting an alert to surrounding police departments about the search for the suspect(s), New York State Police spotted a vehicle matching the same description on Interstate 95 in New Rochelle and stopped the car, Berry said.

As the driver, Norman, got out of the car per police instructions, the passenger raced into the driver's seat and drove off in the car, according to Berry. After crashing a short time later, the suspect ran from the vehicle.

New York State Police are still looking for that second suspect and have taken Norman into custody.

Greenwich and New York police are investigating the larceny case and charges are pending in both Connecticut and New York.

No injuries have been reported in the Connecticut incident, Berry said.

Police have not released the identity or gender of the fugitive suspect.
