Plainville-based General Electric is getting on the electric car bandwagon and built a new solar-powered charging station in the parking lot of its Plainville facility.

Gov, Dannel Malloy plans to help open the charging stations on Thursday morning.

The carport includes four hook-ups for plugging in electric cars, and all the power will come from an array of solar panels.

Workers at the G.E. Consumer and Industrial plant in Plainville research and make electric equipment and supplies.

The company hopes to eventually build similar carports across the country.

General Electric holds part ownership of NBC Universal, the parent company to NBC Connecticut.
