The average price for gasoline in Hartford has jumped 7.9 cents per gallon in just the last week to $3.90.

This is 24.9 cents per gallon more than we were spending last month and 38.7 cents per gallon more than they we spent a year ago.

Michael Smith, a Stafford antiques dealer and restaurant owner, said the prices he pays for food at his restaurant have climbed 22 percent in three months because of higher trucking costs.

"It means hustling every day, seven days a week," he said.

He had found diesel fuel at $3.99 a gallon in West Springfield, Massachusetts, more than 30 cents lower than what he pays in Connecticut. For the 22 gallons he bought, that's a savings of more than $7.

The national average for a gallon of gas was $3.64 as of Sunday, up 11.3 cents per gallon in the last week according to the website HartfordGasPrices.com.

Nationally, gas prices have risen 26.6 cents per gallon this past month and 29.8 cents per gallon since one year ago.

If you’re trying to figure out specific gas prices in your area, there are a few tools that can help you find the best place to fill up your tank.

One useful way to find out the lowest prices for gas in your area is from MSN. Simply enter your city and state or Zip code to see the latest updates on prices.

If you need to check on gas prices while away from your computer, there’s no need to worry. There’s an app for that.

GasBuddy runs HartfordGasPrices.com and more than 250 similar websites that monitor gasoline prices at gas stations across the U.S. and Canada to help drivers find up to date gasoline prices in their area.

Now GasBuddy has created a smartphone app to help those with devices such as iPhones, Androids, Blackberries, iPod touches and iPads search gas prices in any given area.

The new version of the free app came out in October and has been downloaded by more than 20 million people.
