Crews work to repair a gas leak on Middlesex Avenue in Waterbury Tuesday morning.

A gas leak has forced the evacuation of six homes in Waterbury Tuesday morning.

A gas line ruptured in the area of 100 Middlesex Avenue around 10 a.m., according to fire officials.  Workers for the city's water department were repairing a water line when the accidentally struck a gas line, firefighters said.

Crews from the gas company contained the leak after a short time and people were allowed back in their homes around 10:45 a.m.
