A multi-use building in Southbury was evacuated because of a gas leak on Thursday morning.

The gas leak was reported at 458 Heritage Road on Thursday. By afternoon, firefighters allowed Yankee Gas to turn the natural gas back on to an apartment building in the Courtyard complex.

They said there was no sign of a gas leak after the gas line was turned off.

Fourteen apartments were evacuated after reports of the smell of gas, officials said.

Tom Dolan was asked to leave his apartment and picked up his keys, wallet and a couple of books, and left.

"I used to work for the gas company long ago, in New York," he said. "I smelled it.  It was gas."
