Sorry, Please Try Your Call Again

Why? Why? What was wrong with seven-digit dialing?

You're hanging out in Griswold and have to call your friend in Goshen. You will soon have something in common with the guy who's at work in Manchester and has to call home in Monroe and the woman who lives in Hamden and has to call her next-door neighbor in, well, Hamden.

Beginning Nov. 14, we will all have to dial 10 digits to make any of those calls in Connecticut.

So, start making those changes in your iPhone, cell phone, Blackberry, or whatever you use to call someone or you'll be hearing. "Your call cannot be completed."

Connecticut is running out of phone numbers, so the Department of Utility Control is implementing new area codes in the state and requiring everyone to dial 10 digits to complete any call, to anyone.

That means you will have to dial the area code, plus the number for everyone you call, even if the call you're making is to someone just down the street.

Don't say you haven't been warned, the DPUC first announced the 10-digit dialing plan earlier this year, and it has been up and running since May. But, on Nov. 14, it becomes mandatory. If you forget, your call will not be completed.

As for those new area codes, in December, the DPUC will begin assigning some new numbers in the 203 area code region with a 475 area code.

New numbers in the 860 area code region will be getting 959 area codes but the start date for that has not been set.

The DPUC has set up a Web site to help guide callers through the dialing dilemma.
