Governor Opens Up About His Dyslexia

Malloy's embarrassed that he can barely write.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy’s lifelong struggle with dyslexia carried the hidden blessing of helping him develop skills that propelled him to the governorship, he told students in Greenwich on Tuesday.

Malloy spoke candidly about his experiences with children at Eagle Hill School, a campus for students with language-based learning disabilities.

He encouraged them to develop their strengths, just as his mother encouraged his strong memory, public-speaking skills and knack for retaining details.

Malloy said he's still embarrassed that he can barely write and even struggles with impromptu phrases on autographs, but he compensates by dictating correspondence or jotting down words to prompt him before giving speeches by memory.

Dyslexia hasn't held him back, he said, and told the students not to let their learning difficulties deter them, either.
