Green Bank Hopes State Lawyers Won't Dip into its Funds

Officials at the Connecticut Green Bank are hoping to dissuade state lawmakers next session from using ratepayer funds the bank relies on.

The quasi-public entity will celebrate its fifth anniversary Monday. It's credited with helping to boost the number of homes with solar installations in Connecticut from just 2,019 residences four years ago to nearly 22,000 today.

The bank relies on funding from various sources, including a small surcharge on residential and commercial electric bills, to help leverage investment in clean energy projects. In past years, lawmakers have spent or proposed spending those funds to fix state budget deficits.

Estimates show the state's main spending account could be $1.3 billion in deficit in the fiscal year beginning July 1.
