Groundbreaking to Start for New Torrington Courthouse

State and local officials are set to break ground on a new $81 million courthouse in Torrington.

Lt. Gov. Nancy Wyman and other officials are scheduled to attend the ceremony Tuesday morning at the site of the new courthouse off Field Street. The 174,000-square-foot building is expected to be completed by the summer of 2016 and create more than 1,400 construction jobs.

The new building will replace four facilities including the 1889 Litchfield courthouse, Bantam Superior Court, Juvenile Court in Torrington and a family services office. The state now leases all those buildings, except the 19th century courthouse.

The Judicial Branch must maintain a presence in the 1889 courthouse under state law. Plans for the building still are being discussed.

The state is borrowing to pay for the project.
