Group Asks Walmart to Sell Crafts Made by Women in Colombia

A Connecticut nonprofit organization has asked Walmart to begin selling handcrafts made by women artisans from the nation of Colombia.

West Hartford’s Aid to Artisan has been helping the Wayuu artisans of Colombia develop a line of cup and bottle sleeves made from colorful yarn, recycled plastic bottles and inner tubes.

“We welcome Walmart's initiative to provide market opportunities for women. It’s connected to larger efforts to support private sector development” John Meyers, ATA's director of global programs, said.

The initial idea is to have the retail giant sell the one-of-a-kind handcrafts on its website.

"I think it benefits us, because I'm sure anything made in a third world country is probably an efficient cost and it helps people from different countries with respect to the products they want to sell here in the U.S." Glen Decker, a Walmart shopper, said.

If everything goes as planned, Walmart will begin selling the traditional crafts next spring.
