Mustaches. You either love ‘em or hate ‘em, but some are growing them only to shave them off for a good cause. Then grow them back again -- for a good cause.

The M4K is back -- the second annual Mustaches For Kids mustache-growing contest and fundraiser in Hartford.

The contest begins Nov. 13, with the clean shave happening at 6 p.m. at Vaughan’s Public House at 59 Pratt St. in Hartford. That’s when everyone taking place in the fundraiser must have clean shaven faces. That means no facial follicles of any kind.

There are rules that go along with this contest to see who can grow the best mustache.

After the initial check-in to see that you have a clean face, you will meet once a week for the next four weeks to show you’re growing the mustache without growing a beard or goatee. That would be considered cheating.

The meetings are held at local waterholes on Friday nights. So not only are you fund raising, but it’s also a great excuse to get out at the end of the week.

Your facial hair must only stretch from one corner of your mouth to the other. So, no soul patches, or fumans and yes, that John Water’s skinny mustache is not allowed.

Remember you’re doing this for sick children, so no cheating.

As your face begins to fill out, you ask friends and co-workers to donate for the cause. If they pay by check, it’s even a tax deduction. So the gals don’t feel left out, Mustaches for Kids accepts donations from even those who can’t grow the facial hair. The money raised is donated to the Connecticut Children’s Medical Center.
