Investigators are looking for a man who shot a store owner in Waterbury while attempting to rob the store Wednesday afternoon, according to officials.

The attempted robbery occurred at Pereira's Package Store at 229 Homer Street at 2:20 p.m.

Police said the gunman demanded money from the store owner, 63-year-old Frank Pereira.

Pereira was also armed and reached for his gun on his waistband when the suspect shot him in the right shoulder.

“It’s terrible…we have to do something about it,” said Waterbury resident Richard Cam.

The suspect fled the scene. According to police, the suspect got into the passenger side of a blue mid to late 90's Ford Explorer driven by a black female.

The suspect is described as a black male in his 20s, around 6' tall with scruffy facial hair. He wore a mustard-colored hooded sweatshirt with gold lettering.

Pereira was taken to Waterbury Hospital. He suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

Anyone with information is urged to call Crimestoppers at 203-755-1234.
