Hamden Police Warn of Phone Scam

Hamden police are warning residents to be careful when wiring money to foreign countries after a family was reportedly scammed earlier this week.

According to police, a 19-year-old Lane Street resident received a call from an unknown person with a Spanish accent Tuesday. The caller stated that a family member had been kidnapped after being involved in a car accident.

Police said the caller demanded money in return for the kidnapped family member, and the family wired an undisclosed amount of money to Puerto Rico.

They later learn their family member was not involved in an accident and that they had been scammed.

Hamden police are urging all residents not to wire money anywhere without first conducting a further investigation and contacting their local police department.
