Despite the damp and dreary weather, nothing could put a damper on the excitement of Friday’s homecoming in Groton, when 139 sailors returned to their families after spending seven months deployed in Europe.

The Los Angeles-class attack submarine USS Toledo returned to the Naval Submarine Base in New London, one day prior to the Navy's 237th birthday. It departed its home port on March 23.

Five new fathers met their children for the first time at the homecoming.

"I've been waiting for this moment for the last four months," said Chief Machinist Mate Robert Ekwall. Ekwall met his son, Keegan, for the first time Friday.

While on deployment, the USS Toledo covered more than 25,000 miles and visited ports in Haifa, Israel; Bahrain; Jebel Ali, UAE, and Lisbon, Portugal.
