New Court Date Set for Hartford Couple Accused of Leaving 2-Year-Old Home Alone in Deplorable Conditions

A mother and step-father accused of leaving a 2-year-old  girl alone in deplorable conditions at a Hartford apartment appeared in court on Monday and a new court date was set for Feb. 22.

The girl’s mother Hendyliz Marrero, 23, and stepfather Ignacio Castro, 27, were arrested after police found the child alone, covered in urine and feces, in an Ashford Street apartment Friday while investigating a 911 call from a neighbor.

Neighbors found the child when they went to check on the source of water leaking into their residence from the apartment above and the little girl told them no one else was home, according to police.

The child was not injured.

Marrero and Castro were both are charged with risk of injury to a minor. Police said both have been cooperative with the investigation.

Neither one spoke in court and the judge reduced bond for Marrero from $100,000 to $65,000. She has no criminal record, according to authorities.

Castro is a probation for a 2013 drug conviction and his public defender said he is not related to the child and does not live in the building with the mother.

The child was placed in the home of another family member while the Department of Children and Families investigates.
