Holiday Travel Expected to Decline
If you are hitting the road, be kind to your traveling neighbors.
If you are driving Friday, you are likely to have a lot of company on the roads, as people travel for a long Fourth of July weekend. However, you will have less company than you did in years past.
Concerns over jobs, mortgages and savings are expected to reduce travel by 12 percent from pre-recession levels in 2007.
Across the country, just over 37 million people are expected to travel 50 miles or more this holiday weekend -- a nearly 2 percent decline from last year.
The number of travelers actually fell last year too. July 4 travel was down 10.5 percent after gas prices reached almost $4 a gallon.
Gas prices now hover around $2.75 a gallon, making driving more affordable than last summer.
