Homeowner Interrupts Car Burglary in Ledyard

A K-9 unit apprehended a serial car burglary suspect at a vacant home in Ledyard after he ran from a homeowner who caught him in the act, police said.

Ledyard police arrested Robert Chapel, 34, on larceny and trespass charges. 

Police responded to Winthrop Road in the Gales Ferry section of town to investigate a reported active larceny in a car.

Chapel went into an unlocked car and was stealing change when the homeowner interrupted him, police said. He ran from the scene and police K-9 unit tracked him down to an unoccupied Bluff Road home, according to police. Chapel admitted to police that he broke into several vehicles in Gales Ferry Village and police retrieved multiple stolen items.

Police charged him with sixth-degree larceny and trespassing. The department held him in custody and he is due in court on Oct. 1.
