Executives of Hospital of Central Connecticut said their $40 million cancer center will represent the new model in treatment: all services in one facility, instead of the here and there approach current at the former New Britain General Hospital.
"There's no delays in diagnosis, there's no wondering about test results, the treatment is coordinated among the various specialists that are required to treat a cancer patient today," said Dr. Steven Hanks, executive vice president and chief medical officer.
The location, selected after two years of considering various sites in New Britain and Southington, overlooks Interstate 84, from the edge of a former anti-aircraft-missile site.
The Tomasso Group, owner of the property, is the contractor for the project. It should be finished in 18 months.
Parent company Hartford Healthcare is financing the cancer center, along with a $5 million grant from the state government.
