A 24-year-old Hamden man was killed in a crash that closed Interstate 395 for several hours on Thursday morning.
The accident, which involved a tractor trailer and a pickup, happened in the southbound lanes of I-395 between exits 78 and 77 around 2:30 a.m. and closed both sides of the highway for several hours.
Police have identified the man killed as Joseph Civitelli, 24, of Hamden.
Police said the pickup he was driving drifted onto the right shoulder, cut sharply across both lanes of the highway, drifted into the center median, hit a guardrail, flipped over, slid across the two southbound lanes of the highway and was struck by the tractor-trailer driver, who was swerving to avoid a collision.
Civitelli was ejected from the pickup and transported to Lawrence and Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead, according to state police.
The northbound side of I-395 reopened around 5 a.m. The southbound side remained closed until 7:45 a.m.
State police are investigating.
