The governor has given a green light to the controversial Hartford-New Britain busway.
Gov. Dannel Malloy has heard from both sides and announced his decision on Monday afternoon.
Critics of the $567 million bus route said it costs too much money and would get into the way of a proposed high-speed rail line. Federal officials said it's an affordable way to quickly transport commuters along the often congested Interstate 84.
Malloy said he will pursue constructing the busway "while launching a parallel and aggressive plan" for the Bristol/Waterbury rail line.
Connecticut's share for the busway would be $110 million and as much as $15 million has already been spent for design and acquiring property.
Capitol Watch tweeted that Malloy said his decision was partially motivated by desire not to leave federal money on the table.
The busway was proposed in 1998 with a price tag of $75.3 million. Costs have skyrocketed over the years due to factors, including acquiring rights-of-way.
