A South Windsor man is accused of a home invasion in Newington, assaulting an 85-year-old man who lives in the home, then getting into an altercation with police.
Officers responded to a home on West Hartford Road around 11:20 p.m. Tuesday to investigate reports of someone trying to break into a residence and an officer saw 22-year-old William McAllister III, of South Windsor, walking in the road.
McAllister approached the officer, who was sitting in his vehicle, ignored the officer’s commands and continued to approach the officer as he was exiting his cruiser, police said.
McAllister got into a physical altercation with the officer and two other officers intervened to take the suspect into custody, police said.
While investigating, police determined that McAllister forced his way into an 85-year-old man’s West Hartford Road home and assaulted the homeowner, police said.
McAllister left the scene in his own vehicle, crashed into a tree a short distance away, walked away from his vehicle and started arguing and trying to fight with another resident in the neighborhood, police said.
McAllister was charged with of home invasion, second-degree burglary, disorderly conduct, and third-degree assault degree on an elderly person.

He was detained on a $10,000 bond and is due in New Britain Superior Court today.
