Latest Version of Casino Bill Won't Affect Compact: Official

Attorney General George Jepsen's office says a retooled casino bill would not adversely affect Connecticut's agreement with the two federally recognized tribes because it doesn't authorize more casinos in the state.

Under the agreement, the state receives 25 percent of slot machine revenues generated at the tribes' Mohegan Sun and Foxwoods Resort Casinos.

Jepsen had warned an earlier bill "posed significant uncertainties and potentially serious ramifications" for that compact.

The revised bill, which could come up for a vote in the Senate as soon as Wednesday, will require the General Assembly to ultimately approve any development deal reached with a host community. Proponents are optimistic Jepsen's concerns will be addressed by then.

The tribes hope to build a casino to help combat out-of-state gambling competition, especially from Massachusetts.
