Antonio Inglis has been sentenced to life in prison with no possibility of parole for killing two men inside a Cromwell nightclub in February 2008.

Just before he was sentenced on Friday, Inglis, 21, of Middletown, told the judge that he was not guilty of the slaying, according to news reports.

"I stand wrongly accused," Inglis said, reading a prepared statement, according to the Middletown Press. "The state is only human for making a mistake."

"I believe in God, and I keep the faith that the day will come when the person responsible for this will step up and face the consequences," the Hartford Courant quotes him as saying.

Inglis, who was a high school football star at Vinal Technical School, was convicted of shooting Tyrese Lockhart, 26, and Israel Dandrade, 31, at Cocktails on the Green.

Inglis was 20 at the time and used someone else’s identification to get into the bar, according to the affidavit. He argued with Lockhart near the bar. When Lockhart turned to go, Inglis pulled a gun from his waistband and shot, witnesses said.

It was the first homicide in Cromwell in 25 years.

He was arrested 14 hours later, at a home in Portland.

Lawyers told the Middletown Press they would appeal the decision.
