A Waterbury man had an unpleasant awakening on Friday morning when lightning struck his home.

Bill Junga said the lightning hit his Grassy Hill Road home around 4:30 a.m.

When the fire department arrived, they were concerned because Junga’s 81-year-old mother, Bernice Junga, has oxygen tanks for dialysis and the mix with lightning could pose a problem.  She was taken to the hospital as a precaution. Bill Junga's girlfriend, Kim Marcinczyk, was also evaluated as a precaution.

Neighbors told dispatchers they heard what sounded like a loud explosion as lightning blasted a hole in the wall and damaged to the electrical circuits.

The fire marshal is on scene and is investigating.
