Local American Red Cross Volunteers to Help Louisiana After Flooding

From heat to violent storms, American Red Cross volunteers in the state have been busy and a group from Connecticut is preparing to head south to Louisiana, which is dealing with historic flooding.

The volunteers will help some of the thousands of people who have been affected by the devastation.

“You feel horrible,” Amy Thomas, of Newtown, said. “As a Red Cross volunteer, it’s like, ‘Oh man, I hope I can go and help.’”

Thomas and John Lennon, of Bethel, are part of the group headed to Baton Rouge today and they expect to be gone for up to two weeks.

In Louisiana, they will deliver meals.

“Teams of two will go out in to the affected community and mobile feed. You know, families that feel they can’t leave their homes,” Lennon said.

This comes after the volunteers have been busy here this summer.

“It’s been extremely hot, very, very humid,” Stefanie Arcangelo, American Red Cross chief communications officer, said.

Those conditions have fired up fierce storms.

After a small tornado hit North Haven last week, Red Cross volunteers checked to make sure everyone was OK

Also last week, strong thunderstorms in the Quiet Corner caused damage, including to homes.

“In Killingly, we helped six families after some severe flooding due to the thunderstorm that hit there,” Arcangelo said.
