Lovers Leap State Park in New Milford is closed because of a brush fire, according to the Department of Energy and Environmental Protection.
New Milford Mayor David Gronbach said that the fire started Friday night and flared up Saturday morning.
Gronbach posted Saturday that one firefighter suffered a rolled ankle and another suffered heat exhaustion working the fire. The mayor added that preliminary information is that fireworks may have started the blaze. He asked that anyone with information on people using fireworks in the area Friday night contact authorities.
Water Witch Hose Company No. 2 posted on Facebook that the fire was reported around 11 p.m. Friday. Crews responded and found a quickly spreading fire that had already burned two acres. Water Witch Hose, along with members of the Northville and Gaylordsville fire departments, aggressively attacked the blaze, according to the post.
The department said extreme dry conditions helped the fire spread quickly and the remote and steep terrain made it difficult to fight. Mutual aid was called in from all over Litchfield and Fairfield counties, the department said. Firefighters battled through the night. DEEP was also called in for assistance.
The park will likely remain closed Sunday.
