Lyman Allyn Art Museum Obtains Tiffany Stained Glass from Church

The Lyman Allyn Art Museum in New London has acquired a one-of-a-kind Tiffany stained-glass window piece to ensure that it will be on display for public view.

The acclaimed Tiffany Studios of New York created “Come Unto Me,” which depicts Jesus Christ juxtaposed by a magnificent background landscape consisting of mountains, cypress trees and a lake.

The piece, signed by Louis Comfort Tiffany, is made entirely out of Favrille glass and was installed inside the All Souls Unitarian Universalist Church in New London in 1924.

The Board of the All Souls Congregation agreed to sell the window to the Museum to ensure that the piece remains on public view in New London.

“The acquisition of this glorious work of art by one of America’s most treasured designer/artists is a major event in our institution’s history and one that will make a dramatic impact on our collection,” Lyman Allyn Director D. Samuel Quigley said in a statement. “We are honored to be working with the All Souls Congregation to keep this treasure here in New London, ensuring that it remains available for all in our community to enjoy for generations to come.”

The museum intends on installing the window in a special gallery dedicated to the artwork of Louis Comfort Tiffany and his personal connection to the city of New London.
