A North Branford man accused of abducting a man at gunpoint on Saturday morning has been charged with kidnapping, criminal weapon possession and additional charges.
Branford police arrested Mario Simmons, 26, of 50 Sea Hill Road and charged him with first-degree kidnapping with a firearm, criminal weapon possession, carrying a gun without a permit, unlawful discharge of firearm, reckless endangerment, third degree assault and disorderly conduct, among other charges.
Police were flagged down at 1 a.m. by the parents of a woman who said Simmons assaulted her at a residence on South Montowese Street.
The woman was in the road when officers arrived and told them Simmons had become enraged and assaulted her and a male resident at the home. Simmons then pointed a gun at the man and threatened to kill him, police said.
Simmons left in the male victim’s car while holding him at gunpoint, police said, The woman managed to escape the home and seek help at a neighbor’s house.
Police said Simmons returned to the residence a short time later, apparently suffering from a gunshot wound, and was transported to an area hospital for treatment.
The kidnapped male told officers that Simmons assaulted him, forced him into his car and drove to New Haven. Simmons accidentally shot himself in his hand and leg and eventually returned to the residence, police said.
Simmons is being held on a $500,000 bond and will be arraigned on Tuesday.
