Man Accused in Yankee Dirt Deal

The man claimed to have $1 million, but was actually overdrawn, police said.

When a Fairfield man went into business with Mark Hayward, of Westport, the plan was to sell marketing gifts that contained dirt from the original Yankee Stadium, according to police.

But police have arrested Hayward, 52, who they said defrauded his investor of $35,000.

Police told the Hour of Norwalk and Connecticut Post that the unidentified man agreed in 2008 to invest $35,000 for a 20-percent share to invest in items, such as a key chain containing dirt from the Bronx, ballpark.

Soon, the Fairfield man became suspicious, the Connecticut Post reports, so Hayward presented bank letters that said he had more than $1 million.

However, police told the Post, the letters were forgeries and Hayward’s account was actually overdrawn.

Hayward has been charged with larceny and forgery and is scheduled to appear in Bridgeport Superior Court on Jan. 23.

The Associated Press could not find a phone number for Hayward and it's not known if he is represented by a lawyer.
