A Windsor man accused of shooting and killing a bear in his neighborhood was in court on Thursday and has applied for a special form or probation for first-time offenders.

Officials said John Rocha, 82, shot the bear in a residential area on Poquonock Avenue, near Marshall Phelps Road, behind Elm Grove Cemetery. Environmental Conservation Police charged him with illegally killing a black bear and fourth-degree negligent hunting.

Rocha told officials that the bear damaged his bird feeder.

Rocha will appear in court on March 13 and a judge will make a ruling on accelerated rehabilitation.
