Police Arrest Man After Finding Drugs in Backseat of Car with 6-Year-Old

Hartford Police conducting a motor vehicle stop arrested a man when they found a backpack full of drugs and a 6-year-old in the backseat.

Police say members of the Central Conditions Unit and Central CSO's stopped a Hyundai Santa Fe on Asylum Avenue Saturday for motor vehicle violations. When they approached the vehicle they saw the driver, identified as Torrie Smith, 25, of Hartford, reaching behind his seat.

Police observed an open backpack on the floor behind the driver’s seat containing narcotics packaging. The backpack was just feet away from a 6-year-old child, later identified as the driver’s son, who was also in the backseat.

The officers took the backpack and seized various narcotics, including 5 ounces of heroin, five ounces of crack/cocaine, seven suboxone 8mg/2mg sublingual film packages, one 10ml vial of liquid Liocane HCI, a pill container with various pills, a pestle grinding stone, four metal strainers, one spoon, one scale, $316 in cash, and several white wax envelopes.

Smith was arrested and charged with possession of narcotics, possession of narcotics within 1500 feet of school, possession of drug paraphernalia in a drug factory situation, risk of injury to a minor, and failure to maintain lane. Smith is a convicted felon with 16 previous Hartford arrests.

His son was left in the care of family and DCF was notified of the incident.
