A man was arrested after a run held in memory of a slain Sandy Hook Elementary teacher after he approached her family and made comments that were disturbing to them, including that the shooting was part of a conspiracy, according to police.
Police arrested Matthew Mills, 32, of Brooklyn, New York after the Victoria Soto Charity Run in Stratford, which honors the memory of the 27-year-old teacher who died while trying to protect her students during the tragedy in Newtown in December 2012.
After the event, Mills approached some family members and made statement that the Newtown school shooting was staged and part of a conspiracy, according to a news release from police.
When officers approached him, Mills tried to run, but police quickly detained him and charged him with breach of the peace and interfering with an officer, according to a news release from police.
Mills posted a $10,000 dollar bond and is scheduled to appear in court on Nov. 17.
The annual Victoria Soto Charity Run benefits the Vicki Soto Memorial Fund, a charitable organization established in honor of Soto and her passion for education. The fund has awarded more than $20,000 in educational scholarships to students pursuing a career in education.
