A Danbury man was charged with shooting a neighbor's dog after catching the pooch inside his home trying to mate with his own dog.

According to police, Christopher Masi found the chow mix in his Oak Ridge Avenue home around 2 a.m. Monday. The dog had scaled a six-foot fence and come in through a doggie door. Masi first shot the dog with a BB gun, scaring the pooch off, police said.

The dog returned four hours later and Masi reached for his 22-caliber rifle, shooting the canine in the shoulder, police said. The wounded dog remained on Masi's property for two hours before animal control was finally called, according to authorities.

The dog was euthanized a short time later.

Masi was charged with animal cruelty and unlawful discharge of a firearm.
