Man Charged in Stolen Car That Crashed Into Cruisers Appears in Court

A man suspected in a stolen car crash and chase that injured three Hartford officers and two civilians on Friday appeared in court on Monday morning and the case has been continued until next month.

A stolen car smashed into police cruisers and several other vehicles in the North End of Hartford on Friday afternoon, according to police, and Andre Davis, 20, of Hartford, was arrested on several charges in connection to the incident.

He appeared in court on Monday, where bond was set at $1 million and a new court date was set for Aug. 26.

Police said the wild chase started on Weston Street, where a driver got out of his car to speak with an elderly woman.

"Unfortunately, he left his door open and his van running. As he was speaking with the old lady, the suspect jumped in the van and took off and stole the vehicle," said Hartford police spokesman Deputy Brian Foley.

When officers tried to stop the stolen car, the driver led them on a chase through Hartford's North End.

"He rammed the police vehicle, rammed it out of the way. Those two officers in the car were injured," Foley said.

Police said the stolen car also struck at least five other vehicles before ultimately crashing at Main Street and Mahl Avenue.

Three officers were hurt, along with two people in another car that was struck. Police described their injuries as non-life threatening and said they were admitted to Saint Francis Hospital for treatment.

Davis was not injured.

Police charged him with third-degree larceny, reckless driving, failure to obey an officer's signal, engaging police in a pursuit, six counts of reckless endangerment, three counts of evading, possession of a controlled substance, possession with intent to sell and three counts of assault on a police officer.

A public defender is representing Davis.
