Brothers Plunge into Water, 1 Dies

One man has died after a Jeep plunged into Long Island Sound in Branford just before 2 a.m.  Wednesday, Branford police said.

Daniel Fleischauer, 22, of North Guilford, was able to get out of the SUV, ran to a neighboring home and asked for help. His brother, Mark Albo 34, also of North Guilford, was trapped in the Jeep.

Divers were able to get to him, but he died at Yale New Haven Hospital, police said. Fleischauer was driving the vehicle, Branford police said. They said it seems to have gone off a private boat launch near 31 Flying Point Road.

Police released the 911 tapes of the call Wednesday afternoon.  (Click here to listen to the tapes.)

The person who called 911 calmly relayed information as Fleischauer, doubled over on the porch, sobs and frantically says the car is deep in the water with his brother inside.

The dispatcher asks if anyone else is in the car.

“My brother!” Fleischauer sobs.

The dispatcher asks where the car is.

“Deep in the water,” Fleischauer said.

The dispatcher asks the caller to point to where.

“He doesn’t know where he is,” the caller says, trying to direct 911 to the site.

“I don’t know why I got out,” Fleischauer says in the background.

Fleischauer was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital to be treated for hypothermia.
Officer Joseph Peterson, who responded, was taken to St. Raphael’s Hospital to be treated for hypothermia. He has been released.

Police are investigating.
