A 29-year-old East Hartford man passing through a DUI check point in Hartford was arrested when police found a gift bag containing marijuana resting in between his legs, police said.
Hartford police officers saw a red and white gift bag in Michael Lawrence's lap when he went through the DUI checkpoint at Garden Street and Capen Street and discovered plastic bags inside of green plant-like substances, police said. The plant tested positive for having a presence of marijuana.
The total weight of the marijuana seized weighed 1 pound, 8 ounces and 3.5 grams, police said. Police also found $1,620 in his black Infiniti Q50.
The DUI checkpoint was highly publicized, police said.
Police charged Lawrence with possession of more than four ounces of marijuana and possession within 1,500 feet of a school zone.
