New Haven police are investigating after a man was shot four times during an attempted robbery at a convenience store on Monday night.

Police received 911 calls just before 9 p.m. reporting that a man had been shot at Dairy Mart, located at 287 Blake St. and Fitch Street.

Police found Montrell Brewer, 21, of New Haven, suffering from gunshots to the abdomen and a graze to the head, police said.

He was conscious at the scene and told police he'd been the victim of an attempted robbery.

Witnesses told police that Brewer had just left the store when an armed man confronted him and shot him in the parking lot.

Brewer was taken by ambulance to the St. Raphael's campus of Yale  New Haven hospital, where he's been admitted for treatment and is listed in critical, but stable condition.

Police are looking for a black Honda Civic that was seen leaving the lot immediately after Brewer was shot, but said the vehicle might not be involved.

Brewer told investigators he doesn't know who'd shot him.

Police are asking anyone with information about the shooting and attempted robbery to call 203-946-6316 and ask to speak with a detective.
