People said they were police invade a Carmel Street home.

A 50-year-old New Haven man was shot in the head during a home invasion on Thursday night.

When Gabe Rudolph heard a knock on the door of his Carmel Street home around 10:30 p.m., he asked who it was and opened the door when the people told them they were police, police said.

Instead of officers, he found two masked men with guns and tried to close the door, but the men forced their way into the apartment, police said.

Rudolph was pistol whipped and a shot from one of the handguns struck him in the head.

He fled from the apartment and police found him in front of a nearby house.

Rudolph was transported to an area hospital, where he was treated for a gunshot wound.

He is listed in stable condition.
